The Point
A rustic Adirondack hideaway
VERIFIED LUXURY
We verify luxury. Our highly trained inspectors visit every property we rate, evaluating based on up to 900 objective criteria. Our hotel stays span a minimum of two nights.
We pay our own way. No one can buy a rating; all ratings are earned through our objective inspection process.
Our global team of inspectors are anonymous at all times, so they have the same experience as a typical guest.
While we inspect both service and facility, our Star Rating system emphasizes service because your experience goes beyond how your surroundings look — how your visit makes you feel is what you will remember most.
We started in 1958 as Mobil Travel Guide, and we created the original Five-Star rating system for hospitality.
Five-Star
These are outstanding, often iconic properties with virtually flawless service and amazing facilities.
Four-Star
These are exceptional properties, offering high levels of service and quality of facility to match.
Recommended
These are excellent properties with consistently good service and facilities.

Exceptionally well-heeled travelers seeking a glamorous version of roughing it head straight for The Point. This former great camp of William Avery Rockefeller revives the spirit of the early 19th-century
Adirondacks, when the wealthy came to rusticate in this sylvan paradise.
No signs direct visitors to this intimate camp, helping it maintain its decidedly residential ambience. The resort has a splendid location on a 10-acre peninsula on Upper Saranac Lake.
Rooms feature Adirondack twig furnishings, stone fireplaces, elegant bathrooms and luxe antiques.
From snowshoeing and cross-country skiing to water sports, trail hikes and croquet, you’ll find a variety of outdoor activities. Guests have the run of the place and no request is too much. (Champagne and truffled popcorn at 4 a.m.? No problem.)
Gourmet dining figures largely in the experience and with a nod to the patrician past, guests don black-tie attire twice weekly at the communal dining table in the resort’s great room.
Our Inspector's Highlights
- The area occupied by The Point has been practically undisturbed since the days that former owner William Avery Rockefeller would come up here; it's easy to see why he chose this spot to build a camp to escape the city.
- The lake is not just a place for endless summer fun. Come during the depths of winter when the lake has frozen solid and you can enjoy snowshoeing, skiing, curling, ice skating and hiking and sledding.
- Rooms at this Five-Star hotel come stocked with amazing amenities, from the practical (bug spray) to the thoughtful and luxurious (Kiehl's grapefruit lotion).
- The Point provides a truly incredible dining experience. The culinary program is presided over by chef Loic Leperlier, who opens up his kitchen to you literally 24 hours a day.
- The team at The Point sports some of the most gracious and warm staff members you could hope to meet. Never imposing or obtrusive, they play charming hosts to your trip, turning something as ordinary as a hike into the extraordinary.
Things to Know
- There is a no-children-under-18 policy. It’s not that kids are not welcome — in a private buyout they certainly are. It’s more that The Point is set up to cater to adults.
- The intention of a getaway to this luxury hotel is to electronically “detox” yourself. While it’s possible to pick up sporadic cell service, the nearest cell tower’s signal has a hard time penetrating the mountains.
- You won’t find a TV in any of the guestrooms, but once you take in the stunning surroundings, you won’t even miss it.
The Rooms
• Rooms at The Point are all uniquely decorated, but the rustic Adirondack theme runs through them.
• In the Boathouse, the largest of all the accommodations, you’ll find bold primary colors to reflect the nautical flags decorating the perimeter of the room. While in Mohawk, you will find jewel-tones, deep reds, golds and a touch of animal print.
• Each room has its own fireplace, and most of the rooms have access to a terrace or outdoor sitting area.
• High-quality linens have been used for the bedding and window treatments. Artwork depicts the Adirondack Mountains and evokes a sense of place in your room.
The Restaurants
- Breakfast and lunch are casual affairs with no rules. You can dine in the Great Hall or do your own thing, having your meal served in your room or one of the numerous picnic spots around the Five-Star hotel.
- Dinner here is a unique affair and one to which you are invited, but never obligated, to dine as a group with other guests. Your evening meal is always hosted by one of the hotel managers.
- The menu comprises four courses, though on the black-tie dinner nights, the menu will be eight, each course paired with wine. You may find something as delicious as grilled rack and roast belly of porcelet accompanied by a ca’ marcanda promis.
- Do not pass on the desserts, which could be rose macarons, lychee gelée or a lime sorbet.
