Grand Velas Los Cabos
Los Cabos' striking new beachfront beauty
VERIFIED LUXURY
We verify luxury. Our highly trained inspectors visit every property we rate, evaluating based on up to 900 objective criteria. Our hotel stays span a minimum of two nights.
We pay our own way. No one can buy a rating; all ratings are earned through our objective inspection process.
Our global team of inspectors are anonymous at all times, so they have the same experience as a typical guest.
While we inspect both service and facility, our Star Rating system emphasizes service because your experience goes beyond how your surroundings look — how your visit makes you feel is what you will remember most.
We started in 1958 as Mobil Travel Guide, and we created the original Five-Star rating system for hospitality.
Five-Star
These are outstanding, often iconic properties with virtually flawless service and amazing facilities.
Four-Star
These are exceptional properties, offering high levels of service and quality of facility to match.
Recommended
These are excellent properties with consistently good service and facilities.
Soon To Be Rated
As our highly trained, incognito inspectors work to assess properties, our editors check them out ahead of time and provide a sneak preview of what to expect.
Imagine the experience of being aboard an enormous luxury yacht without the slightest chance of mal de mer (or “seasickness”). Grand Velas Los Cabos looks as if, at any moment, it could go skimming across the Sea of Cortés, bound for distant horizons. The strikingly sculpted beachfront resort’s signature sail-like architectural features are a nod to the surname of the family-owned hotel company (vela is Spanish for “sail”).
The distinctive new all-inclusive is the third Grand Velas resort in Mexico — joining sister properties in the Riviera Maya and Nayarit — and the family’s fifth lodging overall.

Our Inspector's Highlights
- There are no garden-view accommodations at the extravagant hotel, whose motto is “Beyond all luxury, beyond all compare.” The property was cleverly designed so that each and every suite boasts beautiful Sea of Cortés views.
- The Los Cabos hotel has gone to great lengths to make itself family-friendly. Not only does it provide baby gear like cribs and strollers, but it also offers onsite nanny services.
- Grand Velas’ expansive 35,000-square-foot spa offers abundant opportunities for pampering and relaxation. One unique feature is a Spa Atelier, in which 50- to 80-minute workshops inspired by age-old healing practices and rituals like Ayurvedic medicine are custom-crafted for your specific needs.
- There are plenty of outdoor recreational activities that can be arranged, or guests can opt to get a heart-pumping workout in the state-of-the-art fitness facilities.
- All guests have a personal concierge, who is more than happy to tend to your needs at all hours of the day.
Things to Know
- Playa El Tule is a gorgeous stretch of golden sand, but due to rocks, guests are advised to do their swimming in one of the resort’s three infinity pools; one of which is set aside solely for adults, and there’s another for children.
- Morning yoga classes are another popular wellness option.
- The Kid’s Club, geared for kids between the ages of 4 and 12, offers fun, guided activities like cookie baking and piñata making.
- The Teen’s Club, on the other hand, features foosball and pool tables, breakdancing classes and, of course, that most valuable of assets: a superb collection of video games.
- All of the hotel's restaurants are open to outside guests.
The Rooms
- The appointments are spectacular, from marble fixtures and Mexican modern furnishings to scenically situated terraces and espresso machines.
- The 307 suites are arranged in classes rising from the ambassador tier to the Presidential Suite.
- There are also six two-level wellness suites that come with fitness equipment, a spa concierge and in-suite spa treatments.
The Restaurants
- Originally from Mexico City, Israel Navarro may be the executive chef of the resort’s six onsite restaurants, but make no mistake — Sidney Schutte is the star attraction.
- The acclaimed Dutch chef sneaks away from Librije’s Zusje at the Waldorf Astoria in Amsterdam every two months to create alluring new menus for Grand Velas’ signature restaurant, Cocina de Autor.
- In addition to 10-course gourmet meals from Schutte and fellow Nederlander Vincent Colauto (the chef de cuisine), you may also sample traditional Mexican specialties at Frida, French-style dishes at Piaf, Italian favorites at Lucca, sumptuous steak and seafood plates at Velas 10 and bountiful buffet feasts at Azul.
- A VIP tasting lounge provides palate pleasers of another sort, showcasing world-class selections of tequila, mezcal, coffee, chocolate and other libations.
