Grand Solmar Land’s End Resort and Spa

A reborn Cabo classic
VERIFIED LUXURY

Nestled between the cliffs and the gold-sand beach on the southernmost tip of the Baja California peninsula, Grand Solmar Land’s End Resort and Spa delivers seclusion and stunning scenery — it’s the closest hotel to the region’s famous El Arco rock attraction.

Many locals and frequent visitors were aghast when it was announced that the original Solmar Resort, an icon since 1965, was to be torn down and rebuilt. But when Grand Solmar was finished in 2011, it was clear the new property respected not only the unique site but the also the vision of the founders.

The resort is an architectural masterpiece fusing local sensibilities with luxurious style. Spacious public areas give way to intimate nooks, all with breathtaking ocean views. Restaurants range from a coffee bar tucked into the side of an amazing mountain-high rock formation to the elegant La Roca dining room at the very edge of the Pacific Ocean.

With all the amenities (spa, gym, kid’s club, beauty salon), it would be easy to stay on the hotel’s pristine premises for your entire vacation, but the in-town location makes exploring the area a breeze.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Grand Solmar’s beautiful gardens feature many rare native plants, including a centuries-old zalate tree. Areas sheltered from the sound of the waves incorporate fountains and waterfalls to provide the sensation of a desert oasis.
  • With only one entrance and with each side of the wide beach protected by mountainous rock formations, the Cabo San Lucas hotel is pleasantly private.
  • In keeping with local custom, hospitality runs deep in the hotel’s culture. Expect everyone from the general manager to the gardener to greet you as you walk the grounds.
  • The seven oceanfront pools beckon — and they never feel crowded. Each has a different ambience, including the adults-only pool, family-friendly option and swim-up bar option.
  • Executive chef Alberto Collarte Pindar is passionate about local produce and creates seasonal farm-to-table menus using many ingredients only available in Baja. Don’t miss the chance to sample pitaya (cactus fruit) jam, regional artisanal cheese or machaca beef from a local rancho.

Things to Know

  • The beach is beautiful, but the undertow and rogue waves can be deadly. Even strong swimmers should stay well back from the surf.
  • The short walk to the marina and downtown area is all downhill. Don’t leave without experiencing the shopping and dining Cabo provides.
  • Los Cabos is known for fiery sunsets and visiting whales from November through March. Both can be seen from the two most western pools — staff will guide you to prime viewing positions.
  • On a protected patch visible from buildings B1, G, H, I and Don Luis restaurant, staff members write daily messages in the sand for guests to read from the balconies. The concierge can even arrange for your marriage proposal to appear.
  • To learn more about the Solmar Foundation, the charitable arm of Solmar Hotels & Resorts, the Helping Hands tour takes you to four of the charities it supports to see firsthand what need exists and how the group is working to improve the lives of many deserving residents.

The Rooms

  • All rooms are suites with water views from the living room and master suite, and all provide a balcony overlooking the sea. The tub in the master suite also affords an ocean vista.
  • The accommodation options range from a Grand Studio suite to larger suites of one to four bedrooms. All of them, including the studio, include a small but functional kitchen.
  • Forget the rollaway bed: all suites also include a Murphy bed and small closet in the living area.
  • The contemporary accommodations have touches of old-world Mexican décor with wood-carved furniture as well as wrought iron and stone finishes.

Nearby Attractions

  • Sport fishing put Cabo on the map, and the marina is home to a fishing fleet with everything from tiny panga boats to luxury yachts. The concierge can arrange for full- or half-day excursions and the restaurants will gladly prepare your catch.
  • Other aquatic adventures include scuba and snorkel tours, dinner and sunset cruises, whale-watching cruises in season, even short water taxi tours to view the world-famous Land’s End arch and a stop at Lover’s Beach. It would be a shame to leave Los Cabos without stepping foot on at least one boat.
  • Golf is a popular activity. While sister property Grand Solmar at Rancho San Lucas Resort’s course by Greg Norman is not yet completed (look for it later this year), the Jack Nicklaus-designed course at nearby Quivira Los Cabos has been hailed as among the best in the world. The concierge can arrange a tee time.
  • For retail therapy, the local stores downtown offer handicrafts and custom jewelry. The Puerto Paraiso mall on the marina offers luxury shops with imported, duty-free, high-end merchandise like silver and gold jewelry, leather goods and Mexican pewter.
