Conrad Los Angeles

Luxury in L.A.’s downtown art district
VERIFIED LUXURY

With the 2022 opening of the new Conrad Los Angeles, Downtown L.A. is home to not one but two glorious architectural sisters by legendary architect Frank Gehry flanking First and Grand streets. More than a decade in the making, Conrad Los Angeles is the inaugural West Coast hotel for the luxury brand. Like its distinctive Gehry-designed façade, the 25-story, 305-room ultra-modern hotel is a well-balanced cocktail of cool sophistication and whimsy, catering to both the all-business guest and leisure-seeker.

Boasting two stellar restaurants — the alfresco Agua Viva and upscale steakhouse San Laurel — by heralded Spanish chef and philanthropist José Andrés, two cocktail bars, sexy outdoor lounge areas with stunning cityscape views, a rooftop pool, a 7,000-square-foot spa, a public space art gallery featuring local artists, a gym and more, the Conrad feels like a bona fide resort in the middle of L.A.’s most intense urban jungle.

Impressive interiors, both rooms and public spaces, were designed by London-based Tara Bernerd & Partners. Overall, the vibe is a 21st-century take on a mid-century modern motif. Generously sized rooms, ranging from standard accommodations to the three presidential suites, come outfitted with white pine furnishings, colorful T-shaped sofas, bathrooms with marble accents, a Nespresso coffee machine and high-tech, touch-of-a-button controls for lighting and blackout curtains.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • For culture vultures, this luxury hotel’s location in The Grand LA is unmatched. Catch the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Walt Disney Hall across the street, marvel at the giant Jeff Koons sculpture at the kitty-corner Broad Museum or watch a Broadway musical at the Mark Taper Forum, an easy five-minute stroll away.
  • In addition to the menu of innovative massages and facials utilizing elite skincare lines like Augustinus Bader and L.A.-based Angela Caglia, Conrad Spa Los Angeles tends to your biohacking needs as well. Even if you can only spare 30 minutes, bliss out in a recovery cabin and treat yourself to PEMF infrared therapy, a NuCalm meditation session or compression therapy — no disrobing necessary and ideal after a long flight.
  • Andrés’ restaurants are known for making a bigger-than-life impression — much like the chef himself — with their premium, locally sourced ingredients, culinary precision and a side of playful theatrics. And San Laurel, Conrad L.A.’s fine-dining restaurant, delivers these elements in spades. Throw in the dramatic 10th-floor views of the Walt Disney Hall and excellent service — it’s not just a meal but a sensorial experience.
  • Staff members at the Los Angeles hotel are caring, friendly and eager to go beyond standard service protocols so you’re pining to return as soon as possible.
  • Available in suites and penthouses, the rooms’ outdoor living spaces go beyond mere balconies — they are so large you could host a party. And with 180-degree cityscapes to boot, the patios offer a chance to take in the views, unobstructed.

Things to Know

  • For the most striking vistas of the Walt Disney Concert Hall, book a westward-facing room on floors 12 to 15.
  • Make your dinner reservations at San Laurel to coincide with a Dodgers baseball game. When they win, you’ll be treated to the team’s celebratory fireworks in the background.
  • If you like science experiments and cocktails, order the Foggy Hill, a smoke-billowing, molecular gastronomy masterpiece Negroni served from a chemistry lab beaker at San Laurel.
  • Don’t miss the gallery space between check-in and the guest elevator lobby. Highlights include Casper Brindle’s five Light Glyphs that change colors throughout the day and Mimi Jung’s dynamic, giant neon-yellow woven sculpture.
  • Let the hotel team know ahead of time that you plan to bring a four-legged friend, and chef-made, cat-shaped dog treats or butterfly-molded cat snacks will be waiting in your room.
