COMO Parrot Cay

A private island refuge in Turks and Caicos
VERIFIED LUXURY
When you need a serene island escape, go to COMO Parrot Cay. It is a secluded, l,000-acre retreat on one of the 40 Turks and Caicos Islands that make up this British Colony just south of the Bahamas.

Rich with marine life, vegetation and, probably its best asset for wearied travelers, ample tranquility, the 1998-built property consists of guest rooms and beachside villas, a hilltop Como Shambala Retreat (whose name is Sanskrit for "center of peace and harmony”), two restaurants, white-sand beaches and natural landscapes.

Parrot Cay not only attracts those looking for a quiet, reflective vacation — the resort’s spa specializes in Eastern-inspired therapies and holds several yoga camps each year — but also welcomes some of Hollywood’s elite, including Brad Pitt, Demi Moore, Charlize Theron and Zac Efron who appreciate the luxurious uniquely designed “paparazzi-proof villas” on the property that are hidden by dense tropical foliage.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • As soon as you arrive at the dock, you feel transported — the waiting room is stocked with drinks and wafting with essential oils that are the signature scent of Parrot Cay.
  • Complimentary classes, including yoga, Pilates and circuit training, are available six days a week in the resort’s wellness area, COMO Shambhala Retreat. The sessions are accessible for a beginner, but challenging enough for a veteran fitness buff.
  • The Balinese-inspired spa offers a scenic respite overlooking the mangroves with nine treatment pavilions, including one for couples with a sunken tub. Indulge in holistic therapies ranging from acupuncture to Indonesian massage and don’t miss out on the housemade ginger-infused tea — it’s addictive.
  • Parrot Cay is a swimmer’s paradise. There is a large main infinity pool by the beach and the houses each have beautiful private pools, some of which are lap length.
  • Where else in the Caribbean can you stumble upon Keith Richards in the hotel bar or hang with Christie Brinkley in her bikini? They both own homes on the island, as do Bruce Willis and Donna Karan.

Things to Know

  • It takes a little longer to get to Parrot Cay than most other Turks and Caicos hotels, but there is a boat that zips you from the main island of Providenciales in about half an hour.
  • Garden rooms are beautiful but quite a walk from the ocean. If sand and surf are your priority, opt for a beach house or villa.
  • Many water sports, including windsurfing, kayaking and paddle boarding are complimentary, as are bicycles, which are a great way to zip around the island.
  • Christmas, President’s Day and Easter are very crowded and you will need to book way ahead to reserve these dates. The weeks right before or after holidays are a great bet and April, after the winter rush, is a beautiful time to visit and much quieter.
  • Children under 12 eat for free if they order off the kids’ menu at any of the resort’s restaurants.

The Rooms

  • Four-poster beds dressed with white mosquito netting, white-washed walls and teak furnishings set the tone for the newly updated rooms and suites. All have expansive balconies, but the corner rooms have the best views.
  • Beach houses and villas are the ultimate in privacy, offering butler service and heated plunge pools.
  • Some of the beach villas have direct access to the sand, but for spectacular ocean vistas, book the Pirate House. Situated on the island’s highest point, this luxurious two-bedroom duplex offers a particularly private location away from the main resort, but is just steps away from the gym and spa.
  • The resort’s parent company, COMO, produces its own line of heady, natural shampoo, conditioner, body wash and body lotion, so even a simple shower will feel like a luxe spa escape.
  • Those who want to splurge can rent one of the private residences at the Parrot Cay Estates, including those owned by Donna Karan, Christie Brinkley and Bruce Willis.

The Restaurants

  • There are three places to eat at the luxury hotel: Terrace Restaurant and Bar, a Mediterranean dining room; Lotus, the property’s signature Asian restaurant; and the Como Beach Club, which serves small bites and scenic views.
  • On Saturday nights, Lotus presents a new Asian food market concept with stations serving up sushi, Peking duck, dumplings and other flavorful offerings.
  • Healthy dishes from the Shambhala menu, such as grilled spiced salmon with cauliflower, quinoa and pomegranate tabbouleh, or a seven-grain veggie burger, are available at every meal in each of the resort’s dining venues.
  • Breakfast is served at Terrace in both its bright, light-filled dining room and on the balcony with ocean vistas to match. Either way, it’s a scenic way to start the day.
