There aren’t many resorts in Mexico working harder to dispel all-inclusive resorts’ negative stigmas than Atelier Playa Mujeres, a property sitting about a 40-minute ride north of Cancun International Airport. Where naysayers insist that this category solely focuses on cookie-cutter design and uninspired cuisine, this 431-suite paradise scoffs at the thought and points to marble-clad floors, wood-paneled embellishments and many avant-garde artistic takes. Everything about this all-inclusive hotel feels exclusive.
But those aren’t the only reasons why the resort is an excellent call for couples (no one under 16 is allowed) and nuptials. The onsite staffers, who are lovingly referred to as arteleros, or artisans, make it their duty to exceed expectations. Azure waters and spotless sands somehow out-dazzle the breathtaking images you see in photos. With every aspect of the property working so harmoniously, Atelier Playa Mujeres doesn’t have to try hard to stand out.
- Every level of suite, from the 635-square-foot Junior to the 1,948-square-foot INSPIRA Master, exudes a sense of luxury. Each space offers a neutral color scheme, Molton Brown bath amenities, a refreshed-daily bar and spectacular views of either the ocean, the golf course or the natural surroundings.
- Though you can’t make a bad call with your accommodations, the best decision may be going with one of the INSPIRA swim-out suites or an INSPIRA rooftop suite. The former is just as fabulous as it sounds — well-appointed units equipped with their own semi-private swimming lanes. The latter has a staircase that leads to a rooftop terrace that has a plunge pool, pergola bed and stunning ocean views.
- The beautiful, Greg Norman-designed golf course sits just three minutes from the luxury hotel lobby. Between shots, bask in the mangroves and take a picture of the Chachmuchuch lagoon, but watch out for the occasional crocodile sighting.
- Where some all-inclusives take the “quantity over quality” approach when it comes to dining, Atelier Playa Mujeres values both. No matter what you’re craving — options vary from Brazilian-style meats (Los Abrazos) and “Mexi-terranean” (El Suspiro) to Mongolian (Takeshi) and modern Mexican (the upscale María Dolores by Edgar Nuñez) — there’s a great chance one of the resort’s nine restaurants will have it.
- The eight bars also hold high standards. The cocktails prove to be delicious from all of them, yet guests will tell you that there’s something extra special that arteleros Irvin and Alfredo do to the drinks at Bar de la Calle.
- While perfect weather and crystal-clear waters are ideal wedding backdrops, it’s the resort’s skilled event team, Weddings Hechas a Mano, that ensures your special day not only goes without a hitch, but it does so in the most creative way possible.
- Bring Fido on vacation with you. Atelier Playa Mujeres’ Pet-It program makes your four-legged friend (up to 20 pounds) feel right at home with toys, treats and a host of dog-friendly activities.
- Public and private spaces come to life with contemporary Mexican art. One piece in particular, a vibrant mural of a jaguar and flamingo by Leo Tezcucano, will demand you stop and snap.
- The blue sea might be the most vivid color at the Cancun hotel, but green proves quite prominent as well. Take the wooden walkway through the lush vegetation to be briefly transported from a Cancun beach to the Chiapas jungle.
